On this IPW session, Wen Jie did not participate as he had broken his leg, and had to stay at home to rest. We have also worked on our survey, which has a total of 10 questions. The questions are:

Reflection 5- Jonjoe

In the last IPW session, Jonathan brought some christmas lights for our ' glowing t-shirt'. Ms Lum also helped by bringing a solar panel as the energy source for lighting the christmas lights. We wanted to try using the solar panel to light up the christmas lights but unfortunately the sun was not strong enough and thus little energy could be trapped. So we could not light up the christmas lights. We have assigned Wen Jie from our group to test out the solar panel at home, but he says it is faulty. Mr Lum has suggested for a larger solar panel so more light can be trapped.

Reflection 5

1.I was assigned to bring christmas tree lights to school to test out the idea of the shirt .

2.I brought the lights to school and Ms Lum brought a solar panel to test out the light to see if it would operate .

3. The types of lights for the project were correct .

4.The test can only be carried out on a sunny day . The weather was overcast during our last IPW meeting .

5.We arranged for someone to keep the lights and another group member to keep the solar panel carefully as we will be held responsible if any damage is done to it .

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Lets try out if the christmas lights function well with the use of a small solar panel.
We should start with a few light bulbs for the first experiment.

REFLECTION 4:-Jevon Tan

Guiding Question: How are we going to insert the lights without damaging the shirt?
Areas of research: The theory of solar power.

Progress of Research: We have gone according to plan, but we still have to work on the storage of solar energy, designing the shirt and connecting the parts( solar panels, wires) together.

Product Idea: Our goal is to create an environmentally shirt that glows in the dark using christmas tree lights and solar energy.

Personal Opinions: I feel that we should strive on and complete this project. If people were to buy this shirt, they would understand the reason why we decided to create this shirt. We created this shirt is because we wanted to save the earth and go green.

Feedbacks/Proposals: Just like what Jonjoe has said, if this solar energy were to fail, we would use chemiluiminiscence instead.

My Contributions: I make sure that my team is on the right track and provide problems so that the group can think of solutions so that the shirt would be a successful one.

REFLECTION 3:-Jevon Tan

Guiding questions:
What will happen if the lights are heavy and bulky?
If it needs to be washed, what are we going to do with the lights?
As there is no sunlight at night, will the lights still be on?
How are we going to put the lights on the shirt?
Where are we going to get solar panels?
How are we going to protect the lights if it cracks when the person wearing the shirt falls down?

As the main aim for the project in our group is our create an environmentally product, using solar power would definitely be better than batteries and chemiluminescence. However, the period of time taken to connect all the parts( solar panels, wires) together would not be a short one.

REFLECTION 2:-Jevon Tan

What i already know about the topic:
Our idea was to make an environmentally shirt that will glow in the dark. Lately, our group has decided to use solar panels to the energy source. We chose solar panels as we felt that the panels were more environmentally friendly compared to the rest of the energy sources( example:batteries ). By using the light rays from the sun, the solar panels will absorb the rays and convert them to energy which will be transferred to the lights.

What are the questions i want to ask about the topic:
How are we going to find the lights?
Will they be heavy and bulky?

What are the subjects or skills i can make use of?
The knowledge of the teachers especially the teachers of science.

Where can i find information about the project?
The internet.
Books
People(teachers, parents, friends)

What do i tell others about my project?
Our shirt is green and it glows!!

Reflection 4 - Kee Wen Jie

Guiding Question:How are the lights going to be inserted into the shirt without spoiling the shirt .
Areas Of Research:The theory of solar power
Progress Of Research:Our progress is rather fine except for storing the solar energy and finding and designing the shirt .
Product Idea:We plan to make a Eco-friendly glow-in-the-dark shirt with the use of Christmas tree lights and Solar Energy instead of Luminous Chemicals .
Personal Opinions: I think that the shirt, will be very popular as more and more people are trying their best to help the world and save it. Of course, creating the shirt is not only for that reason, we, ourselves are also trying to save the earth.
Feedback/Proposals:As suggested by Jevon, we will be using the Chemiluminescence if the solar power didn't work.
My Contributions:I provided ideas, suggestions, helps and physical work.

Reflction 3 - Wen Jie

Guiding Questions:How are we going to insert the lights into the shirt ?
Where can we get the luminous chemical?
Where can we get solar cells?
We may need to use a method to reduce the heat produced by the lights and the solar panel .
How are we going to take out the lights when the T-shirt needs to be washed ?
Can we use waterproof light bulbs to design the shirt ?
The lights may have to have a protective covering as the lights may break .
How are we going to make to create the circuitry for the shirt ?
Where can we gather the materials for the solar panel?

That is actually quite a lot of questions to answer, and also quite difficult to solve too.
We might be using solar power to power the lights instead of chemiluminescence as it is cheaper and easier to find in the stores. It is also more portable, convenient for the consumer. But, inserting the lights to the shirt isn't an easy thing.

Reflection 2 - Wen Jie

What do I already know about the topic?
-I know that we are able to use chemiluminescence as the glow-in-the-dark source for our shirt. It would make the our shirt environmentally- friendly, which is our team goal. While as for the shirt, it could be bought at many locations, but the light would be more difficult to get.

What are the questions I want to ask about the topic?
How are we going to get the lights? Chemical
chemiluminescence is hard to find any of it for sale almost anywhere. How are we going to put everything into the shirt?

What are the subjects/skills I can make use of?
We could make use of our imagination, science teachers to help, Physics, Biology and Chemistry.

Where can I go and find information for the project?
-We could find it on the Web, books, teachers, and bookshops.

What do I prepare to tell others about our project?
Our T-Shirt is durable, attractive, makes you look 'charming', environmentally friendly!

Feedback/Proposals:If this idea fails,we shall revert to using the normal way of Chemiluiminiscence . Eco-friendliness however, will remain due to the fact we will use recycled materials to create the shirt .
My Contributions:I will supply the team with LED lights for the shirt .

Reflection 3- jonjoe

Problem: Chemiluminiscence is not lasting thus the shirt would only glow for a short period of time ( a few days etc)

Solution: We have come up with an idea of using christmas tree lights for the glowing segment. Christmas tree light bulbs are light and not bulky thus it most suits for our project. We are using sunlight as the source of energy to make it eco-friendly, so we are thinking of installing solar panels to the shirt as it absorbs sunlight and reserves it as energy. Here comes the problems; How are we going to prevent the light bulbs from getting spoilt when washing? Are there bulbs that are water-proof? Are the light bulbs and solar panels too heavy and bulky to put onto the shirt? Is the price reasonable? How do we install the light bulbs and solar panel into the shirt?

If our idea of using christmas tree lights fails to work, we would probably use chemiluminiscence as the glowing segment, although it would only last for a short period of time. Problems again; Can we make the chemiluminiscence in the laboratory? Will other people want it if we sell them?

Both solutions have big problems, which are we going to use?
